My presentations will examine the exhibition and collection history of moving-image media at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from the 1930s to the present. I will take a specific look at ways contemporary artists examine non-fiction topics in film, video installation and performance through artist/filmmaker examples.
In the 1930s, MoMA’s Film Library became the first department in an American art museum to collect, preserve and exhibit film as an art form. The Department of Film at MoMA continues this tradition into the present. My presentation will show how film and moving image media have expanded beyond the prosceniums of the theaters, into the galleries of the Museum reflecting current artistic trends and cross departmental exhibitions.
