Alumni

Dear Alumni,

My goal, and I believe with all my heart, our goals here in the Department of Art and Art History are to provide a place, a set of circumstances, a mentorship, even if only for a moment when students may launch their dreams to become artists, to be purveyors of the history of art. To find solace in how we, by working together as artists and art historians, have changed the course of numerous lives.

The newly completed Visual Arts Complex is a major part of our collective vision to answer the call for those who are often quieted by others’ selfish derogatory commentary and their own fear. Art is that which lives outside of any definition, but takes form through the thoughts, memories and concerns of all of us with enough vision and fortitude to seek its wisdom. The Department of Art and Art History along with the new Visual Arts Complex is a source of reassurance and pride for all of us.

Again, a BIG thank you to all of you who have given! We, along with many of our students like Dean Ruck, will be forever grateful for your support! Our new Visual Arts Complex, which houses the Department of Art and Art History and the CU Art Museum, along with the recent renovation of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Art Museum expansion, the new Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and soon the Clifford Still Museum will undoubtedly make Colorado one of the premier destinations for the study, practice and exhibition of art. Our department itself ranked at fifty-sixth in the latest US News and World Report on Best Graduate Schools, with our Ceramic Area ranking at fourteenth. Although we have room for improvement, this is very good news for our entire faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. I can assure you all that we will continue to work hard to improve the quality of the art education opportunity offered here at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

If you haven’t been in touch with us recently, please take a minute to send an email to me at garrison.roots@colorado.edu or join our Facebook group at daah@colorado.edu and let us know your current contact information and what you are up to. Also, if you have news about other Arts and Art History alumni and friends’ whereabouts and activities, please tell us that as well. This a great time be involved with the Department of Art and Art History and we need your help and financial support! There are many ways to get involved with our department and I am happy to speak with each of you about such opportunities at any time.

Thank you for your continued interest in the Department of Art and Art History.

Respectfully,

Garrison Roots, Professor and Chair
